Maarud was Norway’s first snack producer. The production of potato chips at Maarud Gaard began nearly 90 years ago in 1936. One of the sons on the family farm, Thomas Stang, had come across a type of potato he had never seen before during a trip to America sometime in the 1920s. Potato chips!
When the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation NRK entered Norwegian homes with their TV emissions in the 1960s, Maarud’s potato chips adventure really took off. More and more families would gather around the telly to enjoy a good time together, and of course, they needed some potato chips. In just six years, production increased tenfold. Potato chips became a luxury people could afford.
The 1960s also saw the first new products other than potato chips – Popcorn in 1916 and Bacongull in 1969.
